Capetown Herald, Monday — For two weeks we have watched some of the most exciting young tennis players in the world play at the Capetown Tournament. Some of these young players will surely play at Wimbledon in the future. This year the best player at Capetown is without question Arthur “Ace” Burney. For two weeks, audiences at Capetown have cheered the amazing skill of this young tennis star. Only the Dutch star, Sjaak Hoebe, gave Burney some real challenge on the tennis court. Hoebe is taller than Burney and his speed is excellent. For a time, it seemed that there might be a Dutch champion at Capetown. Burney won the first set and was leading in the second when he fell and seemed to have troulbe with his ankle. After receiving some treatment from tournament doctors, Burney was able to finish the match. Burney seemed worried about his ankle and finally lost the second set. In the third and final set, Burney seemed more confident. Both players gave it everything they had in the final set. Fans at the game enjoyed watching the great skill of both young men. But finally, Burney pulled ahead and won the set. Burney is seventeen years old and is from Pottsville, where he is a student at the local high shool. At an interview after the final game, Burney said his new coach, Phillip Howard, helped him a lot, but Burney gave his highest praise to a former coach, Roy Webster. Webster retired for health reasons only a few weeks before the Capetown Tournament. |
