My birthday of this year fell on last Friday. (生日就在上周五)About a week before my birthday my father had promised to give me a special gift. Since then I had been looking forward to my father’s gift.
    On the early morning of last Friday, Father woke me up and after breakfast we got to the bus station. About an hour later, we arrived at Father’s home village.
  “But Father, what do you want to do on earth (究竟)and where’s the gift?”
  “Don’t worry! You’ll certainly get what you ought to have in a moment.”
    While talking, we came to a house made of earth and tiles （瓦）, in front of which was a small ground measuring about 40 by 40 metres. I was puzzled and was wondering what on earth Father intended to do when I heard some loud voices of reading. I suddenly realized that was a village school.
    The school had just one house with one classroom. Admitted by the teacher, I followed Father into the classroom. It was small with faint light, and all the desks and stools were made of rough boards. There were 21 pupils, most of whom were boys. They had little stationery (文具)and few study materials, but all the students were listening to the teacher attentively. Their desire for knowledge was very moving. The teacher told us the farmers there were still poor and many families couldn’t even have money for tuition, to say nothing of plenty of study materials. Hard as their study conditions were, all the students studied hard and two from the school were even admitted into universities last year.
